5th Grade In Depth

  • 5th Grade General Studies

In general studies fifth graders immerse in in-depth learning across subjects, honing their academic skills while igniting a genuine excitement for the content they study. From reading and writing to math, science and social studies, students encounter difficult problems, analyze nuanced informational and literary texts and complete rigorous writing assignments. As they engage with this increasing complexity, students benefit from instruction that helps them clarify their ideas, use evidence to support their claims and learn from feedback to make improvements as they work. Students stretch their critical thinking skills as they encounter multiple perspectives, analyze themes, research scientific principles and apply mathematical concepts to real world scenarios. In preparation for middle school, fifth grade includes a strong emphasis on self-assessment, student ownership of the learning process and the quality of craftsmanship in student work.

  • 5th Grade Judaic Studies

In Judaic studies fifth graders engage in in-depth learning across Jewish subjects, further honing their academic skills while igniting a genuine excitement for the content they study. From reading and writing in Hebrew, to daily prayer and Torah text study, to exploration of Jewish holidays and traditions, fifth graders apply their Hebrew language and critical thinking skills to deepen all aspects of their Jewish learning. Instruction is exclusively in Hebrew for all Jewish subjects and students are challenged and supported to participate in discussions and share their written ideas in Hebrew. Students have the chance to explore a wide variety of topics with significant depth including their year-long study of edot (diverse Jewish ethnic groups) across the diaspora featuring exploration through music, art, guest speakers, research and cooking experiences. As they step towards early adolescence, students are supported to explore and express their unique Jewish identities and are encouraged to take increasing ownership of their interests and passions within Jewish learning and practice.
